Uses:
Artemisia species are the source of artemisinin drugs and their derivatives. It was used for thousands of years in traditional Chinese medicine for fevers. Artemisinin was first isolated from Artemisia annua by Tu Youyou, a Chinese phytochemist. It has since found extensive application for treating malaria and its discovery earned her the Nobel Prize in 2015 for physiology/medicine. The plant Artemisia annua can also be used as a tea to treat malaria. Our current supplier cultivates strains of artemisia with a higher content of artemisinin and derivatives.

Apart from treating malaria, it was used during the recent pandemic to treat COVID-19. Early in 2020, Madagascar reported they were able to control the spread of the virus using an extract of this plant. Following the year 2020, the virus has since mutated, but to a large extent may still be susceptible to this plant.
