Did you know that Ogbono seeds are very high in oil? Up to 60%? The reason most of us don’t know this is because Ogbono oil is solid at room temperature. It forms a hard butter rather than liquid oil that melts at around 44 degrees centigrade. If you want to see its oil, heat your ground Ogbono and you will see oil dripping off it!
Ogbono oil contains Lauric acid, Arachidic acid, Myristic acid, and Behenic acid, but in particular a lot of lauric and myristic acids. Ogbono oil is one of the few, under-exploited and healthy sources of Lauric-myristic oils. Lauric acid is a type of fatty acid that is quite resistant to oxidation and therefore doesn’t easily go rancid. Lauric oils are a source of medium-chain fatty acids, which are more rapidly absorbed, eliminated from the blood, and metabolized than long-chain fatty acids.
Unlike other fatty acids, it does not easily get stored as fat and is thus good for weight management. Lauric acid converts to glycerol monolaurate (Monolaurin), which is known to be anti-fungal, anti-microbial, anti-inflammatory, and anti-viral as well, which keeps various infections and diseases at bay.
Myristic acid is also a long-chain saturated fatty acid. Moderate consumption reduces phospholipids in the body which can have a positive effect on cardiovascular health. It also has anxiolytic effects i.e., it can calm you.
Both Lauric and myristic fatty acids combined prevent testosterone-induced prostate enlargement1.
Many studies on the combinations of both Lauric + myristic fatty acids have shown beneficial effects in preventing BPH in rat models
